Today I am going to talk about Money and Health. I will quote from the Bible about my suggested view on our attitude towards a healthy life.
From my previous post, I had talked about my views for those in their 20’s to 30’s who are just starting their career, by quoting from Matthew. Many of them will spend their off hour time in bars and restaurants, and may have little savings of their own. For those people who are over 30’s, one of the main issues they will be focusing on will be: Am I saving enough so as to prepare for a rainy day, or putting aside enough money to fight against a severe disease?
Your point of view might be, as I may have a possible critical disease in future, I might as well spend more of my time on working, in order that I can save more in order to fight a monetary war against the possibility of a critical illness. You might be thinking, do I need to have another job, or to look for better opportunities in order that I have enough money for a potential disease? Your mind will then be focused only on money, money, and money. I need to earn more, I have to be greedy, I have to have a money first belief, in order to have the peace of mind of a healthy life. Because of this attitude, you may become a slave of money, of wealth, and this is not a right attitude.
Please read the following interesting story about a woman who had been ill for 12 years, spent all her money and could not be healed, and got healed because of one word: “Faith” Mark 5:25-29
“25And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.”
From this story, we can see that this woman spent all her fortune to consult doctors, but her matter only grew worse. And so we can see that there is no guarantee about our health, it does not mean that if you save enough, then you do not need to worry about your health. So, rather than always worrying about your health, and try to earn and make an extra dime of money to prepare for a disease that may cost a fortune and incurable, you might as well use your time and money to seek His kingdom and His righteousness,
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
and all these things, which include what you eat, drink, and wear, will be given to you.
My way of thinking is on your attitude towards money: You should not earn money just because of thinking of your coverage on health, your healthy life, but on how to properly use your money to serve others and for the betterment of the Church. Given that a reasonable allowance has been put aside for your health and retirement, which I perceive is understandable, the rest of your “money” and “time” should be focusing on spending and investing on God, and seek His Kingdom and His righteousness. I understand that we always need to “add value” in order that we can be ahead in having a stable job, but your attitude should not be spending time to make sure I earn enough to have a healthy living, but how to use our time “wisely” in order to glorify God on earth.
You may question me, well, I am ok on finance, and I have a beautiful family with me, why do I have to care about God? From the above story, we can see that a miracle was performed, just by the “faith” of the woman in touching the cloak of Jesus. The same could happen to you, will you be unfortunate enough to have a critical illness in that spending all your wealth will not make you healthy and enjoy life again? By realizing that if you believe and follow in Jesus’s footsteps, such a miracle may happen to you in the future, and realizing it’s not the money that heal disease, but trusting and have faith in God. There is a reminder here from Matthew 6:24:
“You cannot serve both God and money.”
So your attitude should be: Either you serve God, to believe in His words of giving and miracles, or you believe you can make money by yourself to lead your life. This is actually not a choice, but a realization that God comes first in our way of life, and money is only a byproduct or mechanism to let you think that you are in control of your life, but rather, your money, life, and family are all given by Him, and not because of what you have done to earn them. So you see that God loves us so much that not only He gives us “life” and most importantly, He sent His son, Jesus, to come to earth to die for our sins in order that we have “eternal life”. How loving is God, He gives us everything.
